Basic Skills Instruction has been developed to help students who are struggling to meet standards and need the proven effectiveness of direct instruction to help them create a solid foundation to build on.
Basic Skills in Language Arts and Mathematics are necessary to advance in every area of life. Insisting that students master computations skills is not to advocate that they stop the basics. Basic skills are a floor, not a ceiling. Students must learn arithmetic so that they can move on to more demanding mathematics--algebra, geometry, calculus. In the same manner, students must learn phonics so that they can learn to read, to spell and to comprehend to use in their writing, reading and listening--which we all know is . . . well . . . everyday life.
